Winnable Battles: Lessons from Highway Safety during the Opioid Pandemic

Presenters:  Dr. David Fowler & Dr. Carolyn Cumpsty-Fowler

Investing in highway safety may seem a luxury at a time when law enforcement and public health resources are being deployed to address the causes and consequences of pandemic drug-related deaths. The risk is that we sideline a winnable battle in the face of this challenge. This interactive session will explore key lessons learned in decades of highway safety decision making. The connections to the current opioid pandemic will be illustrated with examples and data from national organizations and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

10:30 - 12 noon

"Decide to Thrive": A Leadership Primer on Resiliency

Presenter:  Lt. Mark Junkerman

We don't wait for things to "go tactical" so why wait for them to go clinical, physical or disciplinary?  The "Decide to Thrive" concept encourages forward aggressive leadership which strives to create a cultural of front end resiliency and wellness for its members as opposed to back end response after the fact.  Bad things will happen.  What are you doing to inoculate your trooper, your organization and yourself?

"Leadership for a Lifetime: How the Past Prepares Us for the Future"

Presenter:  Mr. Paul Butler

This motivational presentation will cover what it takes to be a good professional and highlight the power of being a good person.  Mr. Butler will illustrate how to take individual talents and apply them to the group setting to make an unstoppable and productive team.  It is his belief that the ability to lead is present in everyone, regardless of their rank in an organization or irrespective of their situation in life.  There are common characteristics  that respected people and effective leaders share - most of these traits are developed by the individual rather that through the position they hold.  This presentation will cover some of these most important leadership traits, as well as how each individual can use the lessons of yesterday to overcome the challenges of today and capitalize on the opportunities of tomorrow.
